SLASPA - Ahead of the Learning Curve with its Tailored HR System

Last week in Portfolio, we told you all about SLASPA’s Employee Development and Training Unit, which is part of the Human Resources and Administration Department. This section of the HR Department was created to train and improve the skill base of employees in order to meet the demands of global competition. This week, we highlight SLASPA’s investment in a cutting edge HR system which has been tailored to meet the needs of the organization and has placed SLASPA ahead of the learning curve in the field of Human Resource Management.

This highly accredited system, aptly called Personnel Manager, has tremendous capabilities and has been designed to accommodate additional software to enhance the current features when and as required by SLASPA. The Organisation could store over 600 separate pieces of data with unlimited history in each category on each employee. For example, within a few minutes a complete employee record can be accessed with information ranging from career and training history to vacation leave and absenteeism history.

SLASPA’s Human Resource & Administration (HR&A) Department has fully embraced this new technology with each Officer being made responsible for specific aspects of this system. However, the Personnel Specialist – Human Resource Management System (PS-HRMS) functions as the anchor for this system ensuring that it is effectively utilized and maintained. The PS-HRMS works closely with the Information Systems Department who is responsible for all software, licensing and maintenance on SLASPA’s Network.

Manager of Employee Compensation, Mrs. Nadia Alcide admits that prior to the implementation of Personnel Manager, all documents were manually stored which made retrieval of information an administrative burden for all, especially when information was needed with urgency.

Mrs. Alcide explained that since its introduction, employee information is more readily available and SLASPA has thus realized major benefits from its use. Some benefits include, a significant reduction in processing time for leave, faster calculation of employee leave balances, up-to-date records on medical claims, generation of management reports and graphs with customization of reports e.g. records of employee attendance and training reports.

With a mandate to provide excellent service to SLASPA’s most valued assets – its employees, the entire HR&A Department agrees that SLASPA has long moved on from excessive use of paper and manual filing methods and is ahead of the learning curve with a tailored HR system.
