Meet David Maître, Deputy Chief of Port Police – Northern Division

This week, we are continuing with our “Meet SLASPA’s Port Police Management Team” series where we profile the recently appointed Port Police management team at SLASPA. Our second profile for the series is on Mr. David Maitre, Deputy Chief of Port Police – Northern Division.

Mr. David Maître joined the SLASPA team in 1986 as a recruit and has moved up the ranks during his tenure at SLASPA, from Constable to Corporal, then Sergeant to Inspector and notably was the first person to be appointed Inspector at George F. L. Charles Airport. Mr. Maître now holds the post of Deputy Chief of Port Police – Northern Division and he recently completed a brief stint as acting Chief of Ports Police. Prior to joining SLASPA, Mr. Maître was a teacher at the then Corinth Junior Secondary School. He is esteemed to have been the first Port Police Instructor attached to the Police Training Academy in 1990 and in 2002 was the first non‐regular Police Officer to serve as Chief Instructor which formed a solid foundation to his policing career.

As Deputy Chief of Port Police – Northern Division, Mr. Maître is responsible for ensuring security procedures and policies are adhered to, assisting in the formulation of policies that will maintain and enhance security of our ports, and the administration of the Port Police department to name a few.

Mr. Maitre is the holder of a Diploma in Management Studies from the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) where whilst a student at the College, he accepted a challenge from his language teacher, to write the advance level, CXC language and communication exam, he accepted and emerged with the highest grade out of eleven colleagues who also took the challenge.

Since joining SLASPA Mr. Maître has received specialized training in Aviation and Maritime Security Management, Crisis Management, Quality Control in Aviation Security, Anti‐Terrorism Strategies, Maritime Security, workshops on the Introduction to ISPS Code, Instructor Development Training, Training Programme Development, including the development of the National Civil Aviation and National Screener Certification Programmes.

He has also been instrumental in the development of the Port Police draft standing orders; draft Ports Police Recruiting Policy and creation of several standard operating procedures. He is a founding member and long serving president of the Port Police Welfare Association and wrote and spare headed the review and adaption of the Association’s constitution.

Mr. Maître has contributed significantly to the development of civil aviation and seaport security procedures and has also been extensively involved in developing, delivering and coordinating many in‐house training programs for Port Police form recruits to senior level officers and even contracted security persons. He either coordinates or is intricately involved in most matters relating to training for the Ports Police.
