Local & Regional Aviation Community Participates in Airport Security Management Course

Castries – Monday April 16th, 2012 – The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America and the Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation have embarked on a one week training course for Airport Security Personnel on Airport Security Management at the Bay Garden Resorts Conference room.

The training course which commences today will cover a wide range of topics inclusive of Human Rights and Community Engagement, Access Control, Hold Baggage Screening and Security, Risks in Civil Aviation and other Components of Civil Aviation Security. Participants of the course include members of the Port Police department of SLASPA, local Airport Managers, members from the Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation and other aviation security personnel from neighbouring islands.

Mr. David Maître, Chief of Port Police (Ag) stated at the opening ceremony “At SLASPA, we like to engender an environment of learning and development of our staff. We thought it prudent in the changing global and aviation industry that we host this course to better equip our personnel with the tools necessary to perform their assigned duties.”

“On behalf of SLASPA it is also an honour to welcome our industry partners from other islands and organisations who I hope will utilize and benefit from the knowledge and experience of the entire group and facilitators,” Mr. Maître concluded.

In addition to this course, SLASPA has hosted a number of other airport security courses and seminars over the years including an Airport screening seminar and most recently Preventative Airport Security which focused on measures that can be implemented to prevent unlawful interference at the airports including, passenger screening, human resources and training, and background checks.
